Mesothelioma is a rare lung cancer that starts in the mesothelium. The mesothelium is composed of mesothelial cells lining the chest and abdominal cavity and the cavity around the heart. The mesotheium also produces a lubricating fluid that allows organs to move easily.

Mesothelioma is a cancer usually associated with large amounts of exposure to cancer asbestos. This affects approximately 2000-3000 Americans each year. Tumors in mesothelioma can be benign or malignant. Malignant tumors are often called malignant mesothelioma or simply mesothelioma.
